Subconscious access

Clinical
Hypnotherapy

Some patterns live below the reach of conversation. They show up in the body before thought catches up, in habits that persist despite every good intention, in feelings that have no obvious story attached. Hypnotherapy works at that level — with the part of you that holds what the analytical mind can't resolve on its own. And you are always in control. Always aware.

Not this

"You will fall into a deep sleep and do whatever I say."

Hypnotherapy is not unconsciousness. You remain fully aware throughout — it's a focused, receptive state, not a loss of control.

But this

"You will be deeply relaxed, aware, and able to engage with your subconscious mind directly."

More like a meditative flow state — present, calm, and more open to change than usual.

What it actually is

Beyond
the stage
show myth

Clinical hypnotherapy is one of the most misunderstood therapeutic approaches. Pop culture has reduced it to something theatrical — a swinging watch, a clucking chicken, the surrender of will. The reality is both more ordinary and more profound.

A hypnotic state is simply a deeply relaxed, focused state of awareness. You've been in one many times — absorbed in a book, driving a familiar route without conscious attention, on the edge of sleep. What hypnotherapy does is use this naturally occurring state with therapeutic intention.

In this state, the analytical, defensive layer of the mind softens. This creates more direct access to the subconscious — where habits, emotional patterns, and ingrained beliefs tend to reside. It's not about bypassing the self; it's about reaching a part of the self that is hard to access through thought and conversation alone.

"The analytical mind works hard to protect us. Hypnotherapy doesn't circumvent it — it invites it to rest, so something deeper can be heard."
The process

What happens
in a
hypnotherapy session

01

Conversation first

Every session begins with a dialogue — exploring what you'd like to address, where you sense the pattern, what you've already tried. Hypnotherapy doesn't replace understanding; it deepens it. Nothing happens without your full understanding and consent.

02

Induction into a relaxed state

Through a combination of voice, breath, and guided imagery, I'll invite your body and mind into a deeply relaxed, focused state. This is pleasant — many clients describe it as the most rested they've felt in years. You remain aware throughout.

03

Therapeutic work

In this receptive state, we work directly with the patterns, beliefs, or responses that need to shift. This might involve suggestion, imagery, reframing, or regression — always tailored to you, always with your awareness and participation.

04

Integration

We close gently, and then we talk. What came up, what shifted, what surprised you. The conscious and subconscious work together. Hypnotherapy is not something done to you — it's a collaboration with a deeper part of yourself.

Setting the record straight

Things people
wonder about
before they try it

Common concern

"What if I can't be hypnotised?"

Most people can enter a hypnotic state — it's a natural brain capacity, not a special ability. Resistance tends to come from fear of losing control, which dissolves when you understand what's actually happening.

Common concern

"Will I say or do things I don't want to?"

You remain in control throughout. You cannot be made to act against your values, reveal things you don't want to, or do anything you wouldn't do in a fully conscious state. That's stage hypnosis, not therapy.

Common concern

"Will I remember what happens?"

Yes, in the same way you remember a vivid daydream. You're not unconscious — you're in a relaxed, inward-focused state of heightened awareness. Some things feel more vivid, not less.

Common concern

"Is it safe?"

Clinical hypnotherapy, as practised by trained professionals, is safe and well-evidenced for a range of conditions. It is not suitable for all presentations — I will always discuss whether it's appropriate for you individually.

In practice

What a hypnotherapy
session
actually feels like

Practical: Hypnotherapy sessions are 90 minutes — longer than a standard therapy hour, because the induction, the work, and the integration conversation each need proper space. Sessions are available in person in Glasgow and online across the UK. All new clients begin with a free 20-minute consultation.

Where it sits in the work

Hypnotherapy is one thread within a broader, integrative practice — not a standalone technique, but something that becomes available when it genuinely serves what you're working on. It is often introduced once a foundation of trust and understanding has been built, though this isn't always necessary.

It works particularly well alongside IFS, where the relaxed, inward state naturally supports parts work — the same quality of gentle, receptive attention that IFS invites is deepened further in a hypnotic state. It also complements somatic therapy beautifully: both work through sensation, through the body's held memory, and below the level of ordinary analytical thought. For some people, these approaches are used in the same session; for others, they unfold across the arc of the work.
